I. Meaning of AletheiaThe Greek word for "Truth" is ἀλήθεια (Aletheia), translated in Latin by Cicero as Veritas; both the etymology and the translation are problematic.
"As scholars have often pointed out, the word Aletheia only occurs in the Iliad and the Odyssey in connection with verbs of saying, and its opposite is a lie or deception. Someone always tells the truth to another. Of the seventeen occurrences, (a) this triadic pattern is explicit in all but six, and in those few cases the reference to a hearer is clearly implied. Truth has to do with the reliability of what is said by one person to another.
What is not so often pointed out are some quite distinctive features of the Homeric use of Aletheia. This is not the only word Homer uses to mean truth; he has a number of other words which mean 'true', 'genuine', 'accurate', and 'precise' (atrekes, eteos, etetumos, etumos). These words, as adjectives or adverbs, occur freely in the midst of stories and speeches. By contrast, Aletheia occurs almost always as a noun or neuter adjective (once the cognate adverb alethes is used). It is the word Homer uses when he wishes to signify `the truth'.
Furthermore, it is very revealing that the sentence, 'Then verily, child, I will tell you the truth', occurs five times in the Odyssey with but minor variations. (b) It is a high-sounding formula used to introduce a speech. The repetition of lines and formulaic phrases-sometimes, indeed, a number of lines-is a feature of the Homeric style. That Aletheia should occur in such a context suggests that the sentence is one that has come down in the tradition as a ready-made formula which Homer inherited.
Again, significantly, the word often occurs in the phrase 'the whole truth' (pasan alétheien). (c) To tell the truth in this sense is not just to utter some sentence which is true-that is a much more modern conception. It is to give a whole account, to tell the entire narrative. So, for example, at Iliad 23.361, Achilles sets Phoenix as umpire to watch a chariot-race and to report back the truth. The same meaning underlies Odyssey 13.254, where Odysseus is about to address Athena, the daughter of Zeus, in a very fulsome account 'yet he spoke not the truth but checked the word ere it was uttered'. In many other occurrences one of the characters is entreated to tell the truth, or undertakes to do so, in relation to certain questions which have been asked. Here again, the notion is that the account given has to be complete and accurate, with nothing held back and with no deception. The Homeric notion of Aletheia which emerges from examining its uses is precisely the same, with the same force and flavour, as that enshrined in the traditional oath or solemn affirmation required of a witness in court proceedings: to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Given this use in Homer, it appears that Aletheia is a matter of being truthful and open in one person's dealings with another, so that what is said can be taken by hearers as reliable and trustworthy. That being so, the meaning discernible in its use coincides with the etymology of the word given by most scholars, both ancient and modern. The word is generally taken to be derived from a root meaning 'to escape notice, detection'. The same root, with much the same meaning, underlies the Latin lateo, 'am hidden', 'remain unnoticed', from which English derives 'latent'. The word lethe in Greek means 'forgetfulness'. How prominent the nuance of not forgetting is taken to be in Aletheia is debatable. But from the evidence it does appear that in Homer the nuance of not hiding is strong. People speak the truth if they hide or conceal nothing from their hearers
II. Legion ObjectivesAletheia is a casual, fun, matury legion interested in a good time while advancing through the game. We will never institute a required-raid-attendance rule. This is not a hard-core raiding guild, but we do offer the opportunity to interested parties.
Integrity must be upheld by all members. This charter stands for furthering the enjoyment of the game for all of those that wish to be in the Aletheia. This is a guide in establishing and sustaining The Ping through circumstances foreseen and unforeseen. The rules and regulations set forth in this charter must be followed, but are not set in stone.
Aletheia expects and wants our membership to offer their opinions and suggestions of improvements for the charter, activities, and guild as a whole. The guild leadership will do what they believe is in the best interest of the guild.
III. Aletheia AttributesMaturity - We are mature individuals who are seeking other mature players who wish to create an on-line community that is fair and appropriate to the game. One that allows all legion members the freedom to be themselves. Yet display
respect for others by what you say and do. Aletheia believes in
honesty and
integrity and most of all we wish to have
fun.
(Mature is a psychological term used to indicate that a person responds to the circumstances or environment in a appropriate manner. This response is generally learned rather than instinctual. Maturity also encompasses being aware of the correct time and place to behave and knowing when to act in serious or non-serious ways.) Honor or honour - As a legion, Aletheia will stand for something, not just an attempt to PVP people and take castle, but to be a symbol of success through honorable means and a place where men and women of integrity can come together without being force to share a tag with punks, malcontents, and drama queens. Honesty and fairness will be used in all treatment of others regardless of affiliation.
(Honour or honor is the evaluation of a person's trustworthiness and social status based on that individual's e spousals and actions. Honour is deemed exactly what determines a person's character: whether or not the person reflects honesty, respect, integrity, or fairness. Accordingly, individuals are assigned worth and stature based on the harmony of their actions, code of honor, and that of the society at large)Respect - is one of the most (if not the most) important attributes for society to maintain, yet it is hard to define. On its broadest level respect is the acknowledgment that someone has value. They may be rich, work very hard, or may simply treat everyone in a way that gives them value. The importance on this value is that it changes peoples reactions toward you, usually in a positive way. A person is more likely to treat you with respect if you do what is asked of you instead of arguing with them. It is the value you earned while doing what you were told that has lead the person to respect you and therefore treat you nicely.
Friendship/Fellowship - used to denote co-operative and supportive behavior between two or more beings. In this sense, the term connotes a relationship which involves mutual knowledge, esteem, and affection along with a degree or rendering service to friends in times of need or crisis. Friends will welcome each other's company and exhibit loyalty twoards each other., often to the point of altruism. Their taste will usually be similar and may converge, and they will share enjoyable activities. They will also engage in mutually helping behavior, such as exchange of advice and the sharing of hardship. A friend is someone who may often demonstrate reciprocating and reflective behaviors. Yet for many, friendship is nothing more then the trust that someone or something will not harm them.
(Out strongest bond is our experiences that we share together. Accomplishments, failures, goals achieved and unrealized, learning experiences and all adventures beyond belief. Personal gain is secondary to strengthening this bond.)
IV. RecruitmentAletheia is always looking to add players to its ranks. However, do not add many, nor do we add them often, since applicants have to be exceptional in order to stand out. This is NOT a guild that accepts every man and his dog, based on dubious merits stated in an incoherent application. This section will serve to outline what we are looking for.
One of the primary things we look for in a guild member is the ability to follow instructions and communicate well in order to facilitate teamwork. This includes both written and oral communications skills. Reading this post, following the instructions and producing a well written application will increase your chances of being accepted. In contrast if you ignore this post and produce an application which is badly written or contains insufficient information, you show us that you do not have a) Good Communications abilities and b)Ability to follow instructions, and as such your application will not be considered.
Activity and general skills requiredAs an Aletheian member, you must be an active player, who is dedicated to gaming. We will be running guild events quite often, and you must ensure that you are able to attend most, if not all, of them. You must be a friendly, mature gamer. We will not be accepting "Drama Queens" who like to draw attention to themselves by causing some sort of argument. In addition, we will not be accepting people who are self centered or egoistic players. You must be willing to further the guild's goals even if this means sacrificing some personal gain (Take Crafting as an example; you should be willing to assist the guild in terms of donating materials or helping a fellow member create an item)
Forum Browsing and PostingWe expect members to be regular forum browsers, who actively participates in discussions and reads/considers other peoples' comments. You should be able and willing to share your opinions and comment on others' with fluent and meaningful posts.
Upon game release, you WILL be spending a lot of time on forums doing out of game research on various aspects of the game.
Voice CommunicationsWe require members to download and install Ventrilo, a voice-over-IP chat program which we will be using in game to communicate during frantic PvP encounters. A working microphone is not required of guild membership. You MUST be able to listen and follow direction.
Criticism and DirectionYou can expect to be given both harsh criticism and direction, in order to assist you in improving game play. You should also be prepared to give the same to your fellow legion members, should you spot mistakes or possible improvements in their game play. You must be able to take such criticism and direction, and act on them. If you can't stand people criticizing you, don't apply to Aletheia, since constructive criticism is a necessary part of improvement.
What you are signing up forYou're signing up for an organization which will be initially within Aion. Your loyalty to the ORGANIZATION is an absolutely vital factor. If you can imagine yourself leaving Aletheia for anything other than poor management and socially inept members (Which does not occur in Aletheia), then do not apply. Guilds go through rough times and good times, and you upon choosing this guild you must be prepared to work with the guild to better itself.
Your entire experience in this game should be based around the guild, guild events, and guild members. Anything less than full participation and dedication is unacceptable.
Restrictions may apply when you are in this guild. You may not necessarily be able to play the class you choose. In the same way, your "Spec", or how you assign abilities to your class, will be discussed with your fellow career members and then assigned as to best fit the guild and team. You may not always be able to do what you want - that is a restriction that is completely necessary for a successful guild. You must accept this, or not apply.
Gameplay, Tactics, and TeamworkAll members are expected to have the will and dedication to review tactics out of game, and develop teamwork and game play in game. This means that you should know your character's abilities and limitations inside out, and analyze things such as:
-Fights with characters of all other classes
-Interactions between your character class and the rest of the team
In terms of teamwork, you must be willing to play not as just an individual, but as a TEAM. Even if you have very good game play skills, you are of no use if you cannot apply your skills to assist the team in the goals of the scenario at hand, whether that be capture a flag, capture control points or simply "kill everyone".
During Guild EventsDuring frantic PvP encounters, you are expected to remain cool and listen your team leader's orders, and ACT ON THEM IMMEDIATELY. They must have your undivided attention; as such you must be fully concentrating on the game when playing in events. For example, you certainly cannot be watching the TV and playing at the same time. You must also be able to hear ventrilo and in game noises clearly - loud music does not allow for this.
ConclusionIn conclusion, this guild is for people who are DEDICATED, INTELLIGENT, and WILLING TO LISTEN TO ORDERS.
Lack of dedication, showing that you are an idiot, or refusing to listen to orders will get you kicked rapidly, in addition to an apathetic attitude towards both interaction with the rest of the guild and playing the game.
You can be taught to play well in a game, but it is difficult to change a person's attitude; it is even more difficult to improve peoples' social skills. We expect you to have both the right attitude and coherent social skills before applying.
Now that you have presumably read everything, and feel that you fulfil the criteria outlined, use the following form as a basis for your application.
Please create a new thread for your application; please
PUT YOUR NAME IN THE THREAD TITLE - note you will have to register on the forums first. Old applications are locked and archived in the "Archived Applications" section of these forums
A note and piece of advice:
In applying to Aletheia it is vital you show, and are able to prove, that you are a member sporting greater potential than the guild's other applicants. You are in theory competing with people who have submitted an application before and after you, and although we wish to see no direct references to others applications in your own, you should bear in mind that the guild will compare applications to keep the recruiting process fair. As such you should put great effort into displaying particular "unique" benefits you can give to the guild.
The Application ProcedureEnsure applications are written in the Queen's English; "ghetto"/Internet variants are unacceptable; we will not waste our time deciphering such applications. We will make allowances for non-english people, but not using punctuation/capitalisation of first letter/spellchecker indicates laziness, not lack of linguistic capability.
In addition, we do NOT accept group applications. All your associates must apply individually, and be judged, accepted or rejected on their own merits.
When you apply to Aletheia, you may not apply to other guilds at the same time. IF we catch you doing so, you will instantly be declined.
Step 1:Upon submission of your written application, it will be discussed by the guild and analyzed. You may be asked to elaborate on your application by individual members.
The written application will be the first exposure we have to you. It must thus impress, or you will not progress any further. We're primarily looking for a variety of traits and skills, including (but not limited to) the following:
-Dedication and experience; this will give us an indication of how dedicated you will be in Aion, which is directly tied to how successful you will be, both as an individual and as a member of a team.
-Quality of written communication; This is a basic requirement - you must be fluent in english and be able to type coherently. If you cannot be bothered to spend time on learning how to do something as basic as write properly, it is unlikely you will show any real dedication in Aion.
Step 2:You will be actively monitored for the first one or two weeks after application acceptance; if activity is not shown on the forums, your place will be reconsidered.
Step 3:Please submit an application here.
We'll do our best to get back to you ASAP, but please be patient - Good luck with your application!
V. Gear/Drops/Legion BankGuild Loot Policy can be found here. VII. PvP StancesGood sportsmanship, both when winning and losing, is expected of all Aletheians members. Nasty whispers afterward, rudeness, grieving, or generally immature PVP behavior is not tolerated. If you lose fair and square, pick yourself up and try again, but don't insult and verbally attack those that beat you. They won and they deserve respect for that. If you win, respect those you have vanquished as you would like to be respected. Tempers can flair, especially if someone else provokes it first, but it should be our goal as a legion and as individuals to represent ourselves and each other as mature, intelligent, and respectful PvPers. Repeated instances of poor sportsmanship will be dealt with by the Councils and could lead to expulsion.
VIII. 3rd Party Programs/BotsWe do not use them nor do we discuss issue related to using one. No links shall be posted on our forums or in chat that provide information to use such program. If legion member is caught using any bots or 3rd party program which is not allowed by Ncsoft, he/she will be dismissed from the legion.
